The Middle East in Turmoil

So much has happened in one week that it has become a challenge to keep up with the latest developments. On Friday Russia transported fighter jets by cargo planes to Iraq to fight the Islamist group Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS).  During the same week the United States sent drones to Iraq to assist the Iraqi government forces against ISIS. Jordan and Saudi Arabia have deployed tank divisions on their borders against ISIS encroachments. Jordan placed their army on high alert as ISIL made no bones of the fact that they are on their way to Jordan.

Today (Sunday, 29 June 2014) The Times of Israel reported as follow:

“The rapid advance of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in northern Iraq has set off warning bells in Jerusalem, which fears a Jihadist takeover of Jordan, Israel’s eastern neighbour and a Western ally. Former national security adviser Yaakov Amidror told Army Radio on Sunday that Israel should extend aid to Jordan in its potential fight against ISIL on its eastern border, if such assistance is requested.”

In Ma’an, a southern city of Jordan, protesters dubbed themselves “the Falloujah of Jordan,” a reference to the staunchly Sunni city in Iraq’s Anbar Province where ISIS has gained popular support.

Also this week, Syrian fighter jets bombarded rebel fighters on the Iraqi border. In the midst of all this developments ISIS captured even more territory in Iraq and on the border of Syria.

Debkafile reports that the sights of the Islamist State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS) also include “Palestine” (Israel). For them, the Levant is not just Syria and Lebanon and Jordan, but also Israel.

While writing this article, the news broke in The Independent (a UK newspaper), that ISIS declared a new Islamic state in the Middle East with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as Caliph, removing Iraq and Syria from its name. Experts say the move announced by an official ISIS spokesman, represents a new era of international Jihad.

Charlie Cooper, a researcher for the Quilliam counter-extremism think-tank told The Independent: “There hasn’t been a Caliph since the Ottoman Empire, and the Caliph is appointed as the only legitimate successor to Prophet Mohammed. The fact that Isis has done this has huge ideological and theological implications.”

We are certainly entering a new era in the Middle East and this upsurge in Jihadism has the potential to ignite the whole region. The following few months will be a very critical period.

The Wider Impact of the Kidnappings in Israel

It is ten days since the capture of the three Israeli teenagers. World leaders and even the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned this act of terror. In South Africa the Jewish communities gather at synagogues for prayer vigils, praying for the save return of the captured teenagers. On Sunday, 22 June 2014 a Christian organisation, David and Jonathan Foundation and a Jewish organisation, Group Eighteen organised a joint prayer meeting in Paarl, Cape Town, South Africa to pray for the three teenagers.

Others started campaigns by linking the kidnapping of the Israeli teenagers with the kidnapping of the schoolgirls in Nigeria. The world is shocked by the seemingly new tactic of terror groups, blatantly contravening international law and treaties. We are once again reminded of the brutality of radical Islamists.

It is no coincidence that we saw an increase in terror activities before and after the kidnappings. In Nigeria the Jihadist group Boko Haram targeted churches and Christian villages on an almost daily basis. In Iraq, the Sunni Islamist fighters (ISIS) advanced after they captured two major cities in Iraq, Mosul and Tikrit. Today (Sunday 22 June 2014), they captured two border crossings, Turaibil on the Iraqi-Jordanian border and Al Walid on the Iraqi-Syrian border, gaining ease of passage to Syria and control of the strategic trade artery between Iraq and Jordan.

Also on Sunday, a 13-year old boy, Muhammad Karaka, from the Galilee village of Arraba was killed and his father was seriously injured by rocket fire from Syria. The fire targeted the vehicle of his father, who was employed by the army for work on the Golan border fence near Tel Hazeka. The IDF responded with tank fire against Syrian positions across the border, after finding that the attack was deliberate.

The roundup of Hamas members in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) by the Israel Defence Force angered this Jihadist organisation and warned Israel of a third Intifada (uprising). The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a cabinet meeting on Sunday reiterated that Israel has unequivocal evidence that Hamas was behind the abductions.

Nobody can say for certain that the kidnappings in Nigeria and Israel are mutually inclusive and part of a broader strategy by Islamists. However, it could be derived from the current developments on various fronts that a serious push for an Islamic Caliphate in the Middle East and North Africa is in progress. These developments should be of great concern for all peace-loving people.

It seems that Israel is the only country who fully grasps the extent of the Jihadist threat and is also prepared to confront this growing threat before it become out of control. The IDF is already weighing its options as to how to respond to the incident on Sunday when a teenager was killed by an attack on the Golan by Syrian forces or Jihadist forces.

The Middle East is entering a new phase and Israel could soon face security problems on various fronts.

The Capture of Nineveh Province

In Nahum 1 in the Bible we read about the burden of Nineveh. This week this ancient city or region was again in the news. The Islamist group Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also known as ISIS, captured the cities of Mosul and Tikrit which is in the ancient region of Nineveh. Mosul is the second largest city in Iraq. It means the entire Nineveh province fall in the hands of ISIL. The stunning take-over signals the beginning of a new and dangerous stage in the turbulence rumbling through the Middle East in the last three years.

The current developments will impact the whole region and Israel in particular. A radical Islamic Caliphate stretching from Iraq to Syria should be a major security concern to Israel.

Nineveh is an ancient city of Assyria on the Tigris River opposite the site of present-day Mosul, Iraq. As capital of the Assyrian Empire, it enjoyed great influence and prosperity, especially under Sennacherib and Ashurbanipal (seventh century B.C.). The city was captured and destroyed by Babylonia and its allies in 612 B.C.

Stretching from the north of Mosul through Tikrit to the south and toward Baghdad along the Tigris River Valley, ISIL is striving to maintain a continuous line of pressure running through what is practically the northern spine of populated Iraq. The Tigris River Valley contains a number of key strategic energy areas, including the oil refinery near Baiji.

Beyond Iraq, a number of countries are immediately affected by ISIL. The Syrian battle space bleeds heavily into Iraq due to a porous border, accelerated by the almost total collapse of Syrian army border crossing posts. Since January, ISIL has been heavily involved in fighting with more moderate Syrian rebel factions, as well as with Jabhat al Nusra, the official al Qaeda franchise in Syria.

Turkey is especially wary of the potential for attacks by ISIL. Attacks that would exploit the long border that runs from the Mediterranean to Iran. While Turkey has been hesitant to directly send forces against ISIL in Syria, the fact that the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant has seized large numbers of Turks, including the consulate staff from Mosul, may push Ankara to become more directly involved in the crisis.

Iranian forces already entered Iraq to assist the Iraqi government in their fight against ISIL. President Obama also hinted that the United States may have to get involved, knowing the wider implications for the entire Middle East.

As far as Israel is concerned, the takeover by ISIL has clear implications: There’s a foundation of global jihad forming right at its doorstep, not far from Europe.

At the moment, only Arab regimes are on the front line – Assad’s regime in Damascus, al-Maliki’s regime in Iraq and the Hezbollah-backed government in Lebanon. But later on, Israel might become a main target too.

The reality of Anti-Semitism

In the same week in which I wrote about the worldwide rise in anti-Semitism, four Jewish people were killed at the Jewish museum in Brussels, Belgium on Saturday 24 May 2014. It is even more tragic that it took place on the Jewish holy day of Shabbat.

Emanuel and Miriam Riva, a couple in their 50’s from Tel Aviv were among the victims who visited Belgium as tourists. A third fatality was a volunteer at the Jewish Museum of Belgium and the fourth victim was a 23 year old employee at the museum. Just hours after this deadly shooting two Jews were attacked outside a synagogue in France.

The fatal killings in Belgium remind us of the killing of a Rabbi and his family in France two years ago. These atrocities are undoubtedly the result of continual incitement against Jews, which is, unfortunately on the rise in Europe.  It became popular to blame Jews for everything under the sun.  The Turkish media even blamed Israel for the recent mine disaster in Turkey.

The shocking reality is, it seems that the world and specifically Europe where the Holocaust took place learned nothing from history. It can be argued that Muslim fundamentalists are to be blamed in some European countries and certainly that were the case with the killings in France, but in other European countries it is home-grown hatred of Jews. The phenomenal growth of the far right wing political parties is therefore of great concern.

True Christians in Europe need to oppose the false narrative about Jews and propagate the truth about Israel. Thank God for those who stand up for the truth. Fortunately, many Arab people begin to see that Israel is not the devil the Palestinians make her out to be.

The following are some of the comments posted on Arab media and social websites in response to the Olmert (former Prime Minister of Israel) verdict:

Ali Al-Kadi: “We salute Judge David Rosen [who sentenced Olmert to prison]. We wish the Arabs had 22 judges like David Rosen!” [Al-Quds Al-Arabi]

Mohammed Akash: “O Muslims, look at the fairness of this judge and where you are. You must learn from our enemy, Israel. Long live the fair Israeli judicial system.”[Al-Quds Al-Arabi]

Manji Dalali: “This is one of the secrets behind Israel’s victory over the Arabs. We must learn from our Jewish Zionist enemy the principles of fair justice. “[Al-Quds Al-Arabi]

Ibrahim – Libya: “We Muslims are in great need of a decent judicial system to punish our thieves and corrupt leaders. May God help us.” [Al-Quds Al-Arabi]

Hassan Jamal: “I wish Arab countries do the same for their corrupt leaders. I wish the Arab people will do the same for their countries and get rid of corrupt officials, including presidents and kings.” [Al-Quds]

Mohammed: “Of course Islam is the best religion. But the regimes that claim to endorse Islam are practicing repression and corruption. Meanwhile, Israel is among the democratic countries and is better than all the Arab and Islamic countries when it comes to respecting its people and combating theft of resources.” [Al-Wasat News]

Adel: “This is the secret to Israel’s success; it has become a symbol of justice because it has made justice one of its major bases of power. We, on the other hand, are doing the opposite. We continue to cover up cases of corruption and do not do anything about them.” [Echorouk Online]

Abu Zeid: “I live in Israel and am familiar with its laws. In this state, no one is above the law.” [Al-Arabiya]

Sami Dirani: “Israel is the enemy of the Arabs…but it practices democracy – something the Arabs do not know. That is why Israel is stronger and more advanced than the Arabs, who are busy slaughtering each other. Some [Arabs] are dying of starvation, while others are swimming in pools of dollars.” [Al-Hayat]

Hani: “The hadith [prophet’s sayings] states that we should seek education, even if it is in China. And I say to Muslims, ‘Learn justice even if it’s from Israel.’ I wish the day would come when our leaders would be brought to trial and have our money taken back from them.” [Assawsana][11]

Yasalam: “If Olmert were in Kuwait, his case would have been shelved and he would have received a senior position in government.” [Al-Aan]

Rahhal: “The Zionists have more justice than our thugs and so-called Muslims.” [Al-Aan]

Kabir al-Muhandiseen: “This is how states are built. This is the secret to Israel’s strength and steadfastness.” [Al-Aan]

Muhasabah: “In Israel, they hold their officials accountable and send them to prison, while we Arabs glorify the corrupt.” [Al-Aan]

Zuhear al-Karim: “How many Arab leaders would be left if they went on trial for similar cases of bribery and corruption?” [Arabic CNN]

Abdo Shehatah: “The Jews continue to prove, every day, that they have real democracy in this world.” [Arabic CNN]

Saad Sayad: “Law is above all and this is democracy. Israel is the only real democracy in the Middle East.” [Arabic CNN]

Anti-Semitism on the rise Worldwide

Another description for anti-Semitism is Jew hatred. Sadly, it is not an isolated phenomenon, and it can be traced worldwide.

The Anti-Defamation League’s largest-ever worldwide survey of anti-Semitic attitudes was released on Tuesday 13 May 2014. The survey was overseen by First International Resources and conducted by Anzalone Liszt Grove Research.

Among the survey’s key findings:

* Some 70 percent of those considered anti-Semitic said they have never met a Jew. Overall, 74 percent of respondents said they had never met a Jew.

* Thirty-five percent of those surveyed had never heard of the Holocaust. Of those who had, roughly one-third said it is either a myth or greatly exaggerated.

* The most anti-Semitic region in the world is the Middle East and North Africa, with 74 percent harbouring anti-Semitic views. Eastern Europe was second at https://buycbdproducts.com percent. The least anti-Semitic region was Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) at 14 percent.

* The three countries outside the Middle East with the highest rates of anti-Semitic attitudes were Greece, at 69 percent, Malaysia at 61 percent and Armenia at 58 percent.

* About 49 percent of Muslims worldwide harbour anti-Semitic views, compared to 24 percent of Christians.

* The West Bank and Gaza were the most anti-Semitic places surveyed, with 93 percent of respondents expressing anti-Semitic views. The Arab country with the lowest level of anti-Semitic views was Morocco, at 80 percent. Iran ranked as the least anti-Semitic country in the Middle East, at 56 percent.

* The least anti-Semitic country overall was Laos, where 0.2 percent of the population holds anti-Semitic views. The Philippines, Sweden, buy CBD products Netherlands and Vietnam all came in at 6 percent or lower.

* Approximately 9 percent of Americans and 14 percent of Canadians harbour anti-Semitic attitudes.

* Thirty-four percent of respondents older than 65 were deemed anti-Semitic, compared to 25 percent of those younger than 65. Men polled were slightly more anti-Semitic than women.

ADL National Director Abraham Foxman said at a news conference Tuesday morning at ADL’s national headquarters in New York: “The data clearly indicates that classic anti-Semitic canards defy national, cultural, religious and economic boundaries.”

A disturbing fact is that 24% of Christians worldwide harbour anti-Semitic feelings. It is a contradiction of the Christian faith. The Word of God teaches us to love our neighbour as ourselves. May we daily do introspection of our lives and pray for those who harbour hateful feelings towards our fellow human beings.

The Golan Heights

The war in Syria is moving closer to Israel. During this weekend, the Israel Defense Forces declared the area around the Golan Heights, the Quneitra crossing a closed military zone, in the wake of fighting in Syria.

On Sunday 11 May, activists said that an Al-Qaida splinter group had wrested control of key parts of the eastern Syrian province of Deir al-Zor from other rebel groups.

More than 100,000 civilians have fled the province following weeks of intense clashes between Islamist insurgents, the anti-Assad Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

The Golan Heights form a strategic plateau between Israel and Syria of about 1,200 square kilometers. Israel captured it in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in 1981.

About 18,000 Israeli settlers have moved to the Golan, which also borders Jordan, since 1967. Some 20,000 Druze Muslims also live there.

Syria tried to buy CBD products the Golan Heights in the 1973 Middle East war, but the assault was thwarted. The two signed an armistice in 1974 and the Golan has been relatively quiet since.

The Golan contains important water sources and has further strategic value because it overlooks north eastern Israel including the Sea of Galilee, a tourist attraction and Israel’s biggest reservoir.

In 2000, Israel and Syria held their highest-level talks over a possible return of the Golan and a peace agreement. But the negotiations collapsed.

As an outflow of the Syrian war, radical Islamists took over some Syrian border towns near Quneitra with the Syrian army in hot pursuit. This development moved the IDF to boost its forces, and to put them on high alert.

It is also a stated goal of President Bashar Al Assad of Syria to regain the strategic Golan Heights, which Israel for obvious reasons could not allow.  Although highly unlikely, Al Assad with the assistance of Hizbullah in Lebanon and Iranian forces might use this opportunity to provoke the IDF by attacking the Israeli farming communities on the Golan.

Another possibility is that Islamist groups, affiliated with Al Qaida, infiltrate into Israeli territory which will pose a major threat to the security of Israel.

It is thus of utmost importance that the Israeli army guard this particular border with the highest alertness.

Israel Independence Day 2014

Tuesday, May 6 is Israel Independence Day or known by Jewish people as Yom HaAtzmaut. It is a happy celebration day for families and friends in which the independence of Israel is celebrated. On 6 May 1948, the Jewish people got their own independent country and became a nation recognized by the world after the tragic events of the Holocaust.

However, Palestinians regard this day as a disaster and call it Nakbah day. A false narrative is distributed ever since that the Jews stole Palestinian land and Israel Independence day could thus not be recognized. This is also the reason why the two Palestinian organisations, Fatah and Hamas refuse to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, even until today.

Today, Sunday, May 4 is also known as Yom HaZikaron or Remembrance Day for Israel’s fallen soldiers during its many wars since independence. It is also a time when the people of Israel think of the many innocent citizens who lost their lives in terrorist attacks.

Thirty years ago in 1985, a song was written in Yiddish, which translated, goes like this:

In a corner stands a Jew

And he’s crying for his child going to war

And his tears are flowing like water

As he stands and he prays

To his father in heaven:

Father, haven’t we had enough?

That question is just as true now, in 2014, as it was then in 1985.

Danny Ayalon, Deputy Foreign Minister of Israel said the following at a commemoration service: Isaiah wrote “They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.” The sages teach that there were hundreds of prophets, but only those that carried a message for prosperity were recorded in the Bible. We must heed Isaiah’s prophecy, yearning for the day when peace will come with our neighbors, and we will not train for war anymore. But until that day, we mark and commemorate those who have given their last full measure of devotion, adhering to what King David wrote in Psalms: “Behold the Guardian of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep”.

It is a lesson for many world leaders that the leaders of Israel recognise God in their country’s destiny.

Holocaust Remembrance Day 2014

Every year the world remembers the victims of the Holocaust. Remembrance services will be held on 28 April this year.

It is quite appropriate that the results of a new survey about the rise of anti-Semitism were released just before Holocaust Remembrance Day. The survey confirmed a very disturbing development, namely the drastic rise of anti-Semitism in Europe. It seems that the world learned very little from this tragic period in history.

This phenomenon needs to be analysed more closely. What is the driving force behind Jew hatred? Is there historical or spiritual reasons?

Over the past year 554 registered violent anti-Semitic acts were recorded. “Normative Jewish life in Europe is unsustainable,” European Jewish Congress President Dr. Moshe Kantor said on Sunday. Kantor cited increasing anti-Semitism and rising “fear and insecurity” as factors leading to a European Jewish decline.

According to the survey, almost half of the Jewish population is afraid of being verbally or physically attacked in a public place because they are Jewish and 25% of Jews will not wear anything that identifies them as Jewish or go near a Jewish institution for fear of an attack. Countries that facing the worst anti-Semitism are Hungary, France, Belgium and Sweden.

Hebrew University’s Robert Wistrich, considered one of the foremost experts on anti-Semitism worldwide, cautioned that Jewish life in much of Europe will eventually become untenable. He further said: “The Jews in Europe do not have a future…..I think that their future is bleak.”

Extrapolating from the success of far right parties such as Jobbik, Svoboda in Ukraine, the National Front in France, and Golden Dawn in Greece, Wistrich said he believes that the nationalist Right would make significant gains in upcoming elections for the European Parliament.

Could the reasons for the unprecedented hatred toward Jews be found in their design to reflect God’s character? The Jewish people were set apart from all other nations for very specific purposes.

We need to discern the times we live in.

The Calling for Jews to Go Home gets Louder

Rising anti-Semitism, worldwide condemnation of Israel and direct attacks and killing of Jews has reached such proportions that it can no longer be ignored. What are the reasons for this sudden upsurge in Jew hatred or is there a coded message in these events? Are we now in the time Jeremiah described in Jeremiah 16:16? “But now I will send for many fishermen declares the Lord, and they will catch them. “After that I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt them down on every mountain and hill and crevices of the rocks.”

For many years various organisations have been involved with the process of helping Jews to made aliyah, mostly from Russian countries. For years ships departed from Odessa in Ukraine, which is suddenly again under Russian control since the beginning of April 2014. If we look at the deteriorating situation in Ukraine, how long will these ships be allowed to sail from Odessa to Israel? After the successful takeover of Crimea, Vladimir Putin’s focus shifted to Eastern Ukraine. In a television interview this past week, Putin referred to Eastern Ukraine as “Noworossia”, which means New Russia.

On Passover Eve, armed men in Donetsk handed out notices ordering all Jews over 16 years of age to register as Jews or face deportation. It further orders Jews to pay a registration fee of $50 before May 3 and list all real estate and vehicles owned.

The incident happened as around 20 Jews were leaving the synagogue last week. The three hooded men handing out the pamphlets were carrying a Russian flag and the symbol of the separatist Republic of Donetsk.

The unrest in Ukraine has brought with it a rise in anti-Semitic attacks on the region’s Jewish population, highlighted by such events as the stabbing of the Deputy Commander of ZAKA Kiev and Hatzalah Kiev Chairman Rabbi Hillel Cohen.

Tzvi Magen, the former Israeli ambassador to Russia, told Arutz Sheva on Wednesday night that Russia is orchestrating the confrontations in an attempt to seize greater control over Ukraine.

Last Sunday, a 70 year old man while shouting “Heil Hitler”, shot and killed 3 Jewish people at the Overland Park Jewish Community Centre and Old Age Home in Kansas, USA. Similar incidents took place in France two years ago.

In Hungary, the ultranationalist party Jobbik won nearly 20% of the votes. The president of the European Jewish Congress, Dr Moshe Kantor said: “this is truly a dark day for Hungary” and added: “The gains made by Jobbik, an unashamedly neo-Nazi political party, should serve as a wake-up call for the whole of Europe.

Now is the time to keep our eyes and ears wide open. I believe we are witnessing prophetic events unfolding.

Pesach Offers a Meaningful Life Lesson

In the spirit of Pesach, the normal articles about developments in Israel and the Middle East will be resumed next week.

Posted here is an article written by Rabbi Ari Enkin, Spritural Director, United with Israel:

Matza, the Simplest of Foods, Offers a Meaningful Life Lesson

I would like to share some of the symbolic and spiritual interpretations of the matza that we eat during the eight days of Passover.

Actually, in Israel we observe seven days of Passover, just as the Torah commands. For reasons beyond the scope of this article, however, there is an extra day for those who live in the Exile.

Let’s think about it for a moment. Do you know the recipe ? Nope, no yeast. Nope, no baking soda. Nope, no sugar; no salt either! The recipe is simple: flour and water. No additives. No preservatives.

A Symbol of Spirituality

It is because of its minimal ingredients that matza is called lechem oni. Lechem is bread in Hebrew, and oni means poor. Hence, matza is also known as “the poor man’s bread.”

Just as a poor, impoverished person has nothing other than the most absolute basics, so too, the bread of Passover is made of nothing but the absolute basics. This basic – flour and water only – content of matza symbolizes both a process of simplicity and refinement as well as spiritual freedom.

The Talmud teaches that the more a person is occupied with the physical world and the pursuit of material possessions, the more his mind is occupied with worldly matters, rather than spiritual ones. The poor person, on the other hand, has no possessions and is therefore only minimally occupied with the physical and material world. As such, it might just be that it is the poor people who are more focused on spirituality and spiritual growth.

Maybe, just maybe, the matza that we eat on the holy night of the Passover Seder, the night when God redeemed us from Egypt and solidified us as His nation and His people, is there to remind us that if we truly want to connect with Him, we need to focus on simplicity.

Return to Land of Israel was a ‘Miracle of Simplicity’

Sure, we all want wealth. And of course we have needs that must be met. But the matza is there to remind us that the endless pursuit of possessions and wealth is not the true “route out of Egypt” that a person is to take if he wants to get closer to God.

The return of the Jewish people to the land of Israel was nothing less than a “miracle of matza,” a miracle of simplicity. Simply look through the pages of history and see how we have defied all the rules. No nation ever maintained its identity in a state of exile as we have. No nation had the audacity, after 2,000 years of exile, to return home, pick up the pieces and rebuild a country on the ashes of the Holocaust. We were a handful of destitute survivors with little weaponry who managed to take out the armies of five powerful countries and declare the State of Israel.

Therefore, with every bite of matza that you take this Passover, remember that we are a people of miracles. We are a people that does not need endless amounts of wealth and material possessions in order to succeed. We defy the laws of history and nature. Appreciate what you have. If you needed more, God would have ensured that you had it.

Celebrate the miracles. Celebrate your freedom. Celebrate your simplicity!

The Passover Story
